In keeping with this week of advent, I have been reflecting on hope, and this is the song I keep coming back to. Take a listen, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have been!

We are safely back in Toronto and happy to be done flying with a baby! Torre did really well, and there were lots of babies on both our flights so I think everyone was pleasantly surprised overall with the minimal amount of crying/fussing that happened.
My computer is not uploading pictures right now, but hopefully I can sort that out soon and put up a few highlights from our trip soon! On the bright side, we returned to a much fancier looking building than the one we left (under construction) - a playground has been installed next to the building, and the landscaping has been gussied up with lots of shrubs, benches and lights - all making it much nicer to sit out on nights (like this one) where it is cooler outside than inside :)

There is a popular song out right now called Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert. It is a song against homophobia and in support of gay marriage, and it raises some good points: Disagreement is no excuse for hatred, and judging a person or thinking you know them based on one aspect of their beliefs or lifestyle is absolutely unfair. Sadly the positives of this song are outweighed for me by the inconsistency of promoting tolerance and understanding while painting opponents of gay marriage with a single brush.
Unfortunately, I think this song highlights the dangerous direction our culture is swinging, from the homophobic extreme that has caused so much hatred, fear and pain to the opposite extreme where homosexuality is unquestioningly celebrated and anyone who isn't on board with that is sidelined and labelled as an ignorant bigot, a religious nutjob or both.

I have yet to decide when I will begin my maternity leave, but I have been thinking about it a lot. First of all, what a fantastic blessing that I can collect money for a whole year for doing nothing except having been employed while I was pregnant. And how great that after this year off I can waltz right back to my job like I never left – I do not take it for granted that I have a whole lot of job security compared to pregnant women in different times and places.

It's hard to believe that it's May already! I think it snuck up me this year because for the first time in 5 years, April was not a frenzy of term papers and final exams. I've had space to breathe, and April just slipped away in a few gusty, rainy days. The grass is so impossibly green after the rain, and the air smells like dark, clean soil, and the days are getting warmer and longer, and I've loved watching Spring unfold for its own sake, not to wish a semester over and Summer on its way.

I am still without the itch to blog, just enjoying life as it happens and trying to focus more on the good than the not-great. I'm enjoying a lazy Sunday afternoon, listening to music, cooking for tonight/later this week, and I decided to see what is new online. I came across such a cool story that I decided to post it here, but be warned it's a pretty long read. The story is about two families from Ontario who adopted daughters from China who turned out to be identical twins! I found it so fascinating to read about twins in general, and to read about how these two families are working together to support their daughters as sisters :)
If you have the time, I think this is a great story, and I'm so happy it made it into the newspaper!

Here is something I have been thinking of mentioning for a while but wasn't sure if it was tacky or not. Today I've decided: it's my blog! Who cares if it's tacky! I am gonna tell all of y'all how to get some free stuff like I do, and it's totally up to you whether you do anything about it. I don't even actually think it's tacky.
Here's the deal. There is a website called swagbucks where you can collect made-up points and trade those points for real-life stuff. Like Amazon giftcards! That's all I've redeemed points for so far, but it's $15 towards Amazon that I didn't have three months ago, and that is not too shabby!

I have been in a bad way spiritually for the last couple months, and I finally came to my senses how foolish it is to hope for unchanged circumstances to yield new results. And this week since I decided to change some circumstances I have started to read my Bible again. And I've prayed!
These are small but hopeful steps that I am SO grateful for, as I feel some healing creep up into my soul :)

I'm not always that into stuff. Life happens day by day, framed by work and chores, commuting and running errands. But. I don't know whether it was the super-duper Christmas AND New Year's long weekends or just having some down time in general, but I have expanded my horizons people! Yes, I have found time to participate in culture. And I love it! So please enjoy this peek at three of the things I am currently into:
I'm reading Anne of Green Gables. I downloaded the first two books for free to my ereader after Christmas and soaked them up like comfort food for my soul. I cried when Matthew died like I always do, and I need to get my act together to put the third book on hold at the library so it will be ready as soon as I finish Anne of Avonlea!
